Syria’s new education minister, Nazir Mohammad al-Qadri, announced that starting next week, all educational references to the former ruling Baath party will be removed. Despite this change, school curricula will not be otherwise altered, and girls’ right to education will remain unaffected. He affirmed the importance of education for all genders, noting that there might be more girls in Syrian schools than boys. Following President Bashar al-Assad’s ousting by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), concerns arose regarding potential conservative policies. However, Qadri emphasized the continuation of mixed primary schools and largely segregated secondary education. Syria, known for its strong education system despite 13 years of civil war, faced significant school damage. Qadri, once imprisoned by the Assad regime, now part of Syria’s young new government, aims to rebuild the education sector without enforcing Baathist nationalist studies
