The head of Gaza’s police force and at least 67 others were killed in Israeli airstrikes, according to statements from Gaza authorities. The strikes were carried out amidst escalating tensions in the region, which have followed a series of cross-border incidents.
The attack occurred in the Al-Mawasi district, which was designated as a humanitarian zone for civilians earlier in the 14-month-old war between Israel and Hamas, which rules Gaza.
An intelligence-based strike was conducted by the Israeli military in Al-Mawasi, just west of the city of Khan Younis, during which Shahwan, identified as the leader of Hamas forces in southern Gaza, was eliminated. No mention was made of Salah’s death in the military’s statement.
“As the year begins, we got … another reminder that there is no humanitarian zone let alone a safe zone” in Gaza, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA, said in a post on X
