TORONTO — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday after nearly ten years in office, citing growing dissatisfaction with his leadership and mounting turmoil within his government, marked by the sudden resignation of his finance minister.

Trudeau, who joins a global wave of leaders ousted by increasing voter discontent, acknowledged that it had become clear he could not continue as leader through the next election due to internal party conflicts. He will remain in office until a new Liberal Party leader is chosen.

“I don’t easily back down in the face of a challenge, especially one so important to our party and our country. But I serve in this role because I deeply value the interests of Canadians and the health of our democracy,” said Trudeau, visibly emotional as he made the announcement outside his official residence.

He announced that Parliament, originally scheduled to reconvene on January 27, would be suspended until March 24. This delay would provide time for a leadership race within the Liberal Party. With all three major opposition parties indicating their intention to challenge the Liberals in a no-confidence vote upon Parliament’s return, a spring election following the selection of a new Liberal leader now seems inevitable.

“The Liberal Party of Canada is a vital institution in the history of our country and our democracy,” Trudeau said. “The next prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party will carry forward its values and ideals into the upcoming election. I look forward to seeing this process unfold in the coming months.”

Trudeau rose to power in 2015 after a decade of Conservative Party governance, initially praised for steering the country back to its liberal roots. However, the 53-year-old, the son of one of Canada’s most renowned prime ministers, saw his popularity plummet in recent years over various issues, including the escalating cost of food and housing, as well as rising immigration.

In a recorded message posted on X, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre remarked that Canadians “desperate to move on from this dark chapter in our history might feel a sense of relief” at Trudeau’s departure. However, he added, “What has really changed? Every Liberal MP in power today, and every potential leadership contender, played a role in helping Justin Trudeau fracture the country over the last nine years.”

Other opposition leaders also voiced their criticism, including Jagmeet Singh, leader of the left-wing New Democratic Party.

“It doesn’t matter who the next Liberal leader is. They’ve let you down. They don’t deserve another chance,” said Singh, who had supported Trudeau’s government for years.

Meanwhile, Sachit Mehra, president of the Liberal Party, expressed that members were “immensely grateful” to Trudeau for his “transformational progress,” such as $10-a-day childcare, dental care, and a national climate plan. Mehra announced that he would convene a meeting this week to start the process of selecting a new leader.

The political turmoil arrives at a challenging time for Canada on the international stage. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has warned of imposing a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods unless the Canadian government addresses what he describes as a flow of migrants and drugs into the U.S. — despite the fact that far fewer of these cross into the U.S. from Canada than from Mexico, which Trump has also threatened.
