A blockbuster five-test series between Australia and India was clinched by Australia with a 3-1 victory on Sunday, securing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade. The momentum of the pulsating series swung back and forth by the session, with the fifth test hanging in the balance until the final hour, when a six-wicket triumph was achieved by Australia.

Travis Head and debutant Beau Webster guided Australia to their victory target of 162 runs, helped by an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 58. Their efforts were perhaps aided by Jasprit Bumrah’s inability to bowl due to a back injury.

A packed house at the Sydney Cricket Ground, bathed in pink for Glenn McGrath’s cancer charity, witnessed the win. The victory also ensured Australia’s defense of their World Test Championship title against South Africa at Lord’s in June.

The series, described as seesawing by Australia skipper Pat Cummins, ended with the trophy held by Australia, much to his pride and enjoyment.

On a fast-paced first two days, 15 wickets fell on Saturday, and by Sunday morning, India was dismissed for 157 after four more wickets were taken by Australia in the first hour. In the absence of Player of the Series Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj kept Australian nerves on edge by removing four top-order batters.

Krishna dismissed opener Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith before lunch, while Siraj claimed Usman Khawaja after the break, leaving Australia at 104-4. Smith fell one run shy of becoming the fourth Australian to pass the 10,000-run milestone, a moment marked by his visible frustration.

Despite the challenges, Head and Webster ensured the victory, with Webster hitting the winning runs with a straight four. Bumrah, who had taken 32 wickets over the five matches, acknowledged the frustration of being unable to continue but recognized the well-fought nature of the series and the learning opportunities for younger players.

Australia’s victory was even more impressive, considering the 295-run defeat they suffered in the series opener in Perth. The generational bowling talent on both teams made big scores scarce, with only five centuries scored throughout the series.

The series marked an end of an era for India, with retirements and leadership changes, including Rohit Sharma’s request to be dropped for the final test and Virat Kohli’s struggles. However, Bumrah’s efforts were pivotal, keeping India’s hopes alive while he was bowling.

The five-test series in Australia proved tough, as seen in Bumrah’s Herculean efforts. In his absence, young talents like Sam Konstas assured their places in future Australian cricket plans. Scott Boland was named Player of the Match in Sydney, finishing with figures of 6-45 for a 10-wicket match haul, highlighting the exceptional bowling talent on display throughout the series.
