Ottawa, March 15, 2025 — Mark Carney has officially been sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada, taking over from Justin Trudeau in a historic transition of power. The former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor now steps into political leadership despite never having held elected office before.

During his inaugural address, Carney signaled his intent to navigate Canada’s increasingly complex relationship with the United States, stating he is prepared to work with U.S. President Donald Trump despite ongoing trade disputes and diplomatic tensions.

“Canada’s relationship with the United States is vital. While we may have our differences, I am committed to ensuring our partnership remains strong, fair, and beneficial to both nations,” Carney said.

Cabinet Appointments and Policy Shifts

Carney wasted no time assembling his cabinet, which includes François-Philippe Champagne as Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, and Dominic LeBlanc as Minister of International Trade. Melanie Joly remains as Foreign Minister, while Bill Blair continues as Defense Minister.

One of Carney’s first major actions was the abolition of the consumer carbon tax, fulfilling a key campaign promise and marking a clear departure from Trudeau’s environmental policies.

Election on the Horizon?

Carney currently does not hold a seat in Parliament, making it likely that a general election will be called soon. His leadership comes at a time of heightened political tension, particularly concerning trade relations with the U.S. Trump’s tariffs on Canadian exports have fueled economic uncertainty, and Carney is expected to push for stronger ties with European allies to counterbalance U.S. policies.

Public Reaction and Challenges Ahead

The political shift comes amid growing public discontent with Trump in Canada, with widespread protests and boycotts of U.S. goods. Carney will have to balance diplomatic pragmatism with rising nationalist sentiment while steering Canada’s economy through turbulent global waters.

With trade, climate policy, and foreign relations at the forefront of his agenda, Carney’s leadership will be put to the test in the coming months.
