On Monday, it was stated by Russia’s defence minister that preparations must be made by Moscow to face the NATO military alliance in Europe within the next decade, as the Ukraine war was described by President Vladimir Putin as turning in Moscow’s favour.
Evidence from a NATO summit in July and military doctrines in the U.S. and other NATO countries was cited by Andrei Belousov, Putin’s defence chief, to emphasize the need for readiness against a more assertive NATO in the future.
It was explained by Belousov that the activities of the Ministry of Defence are focused on ensuring full readiness for any scenario, including the possibility of a military conflict with NATO in Europe over the next decade.
A series of changes and reforms were outlined by Belousov, which he said were necessary to address the evolving nature of military conflicts.
U.S. plans to modernize its nuclear forces, the opening of a missile defence base in Poland, NATO’s new combat readiness strategies, and the planned deployment of U.S. medium-range missiles in Germany by 2026 were highlighted. Concerns were expressed about U.S. development of short- and medium-range missiles, with an indication given that Russia would revoke its voluntary restrictions on deploying similar weapons if the U.S. proceeded with its deployment plans.
