Several children were reported dead following a stampede on Wednesday at a holiday funfair in southwestern Nigeria. The incident occurred at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Oyo State, near Lagos.

Security forces responded to the scene and detained the event organizers, according to a statement from state governor Seyi Makinde.

“It was confirmed that a stampede at the venue led to multiple casualties and injuries,” Makinde said. “This is a very sad day, and we extend our condolences to the parents who have lost their children.”

Nigeria’s national emergency services deployed a team to assist the victims. Injured children were taken to local hospitals, and parents were urged to check for missing persons.

Local media identified the event organizers as the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation, which held a similar event for children last year.
